I loved the style of singing and the friendships and close bonds formed. I can’t believe the expertise of the CYO staff and all that they have taught me.
Cambridge Youth Opera mounts fully staged opera productions with children, teenagers and young adults. We aim to make opera, and the arts in general, accessible to all young people. All our activities are open access and free to participants.
What to expect
We welcome young people with an interest in any of the many elements that go to make up an opera, onstage and backstage. When you join CYO, you’ll be working closely with a dedicated team of coaches, who will provide opportunities for everybody to grow their skill and experience. We encourage collaboration and support among our members – many lasting friendships have been formed during our shows.
I enjoyed making props and then seeing what I had made in the performance, it was satisfying seeing how what I did added to it. It was a great thing to be involved in and everyone was very kind, I would definitely do it again.
We take care to select works either written for the relevant age group, or which can be performed without placing a strain on young voices. Our productions are conceived to be in keeping with the spirit of the work while made relevant and attractive. We always perform in English.
- Access to our chorus and production team is completely open. There are no auditions and anybody can join.
- We select our solo singers through open auditions and encourage everybody to come along and sing when we call auditions.
- Most of our productions involve a small orchestra. The orchestra for each show is different, so for each show, we will be looking for specific instruments and level of skill. Orchestral players are usually required to be Grade 8+ in proficiency. Entry to the orchestra is by audition and usually takes place later in the production period.
