Our core activity involves the mounting of fully staged opera productions with children and young people. Past productions include:
- Daphnis and Chloe – 2017
- Amahl and the Night Visitors – 2015 & 2013
- Brundibár – 2015
- The Magic Flute – 2013
- Towards an Unknown Port (with the English Touring Opera – 2012)
- Dido and Aeneas – 2011
Our focus is on high quality, age appropriate productions. We take care to select works either written for the relevant age group, or which can be performed without placing a strain on young voices. Our productions are conceived to be in keeping with the spirit of the work while made relevant and attractive to young people. We always perform in English.
We place particular value on healthy vocal quality, appropriate to the age of the singers. We encourage all singers to explore beyond the boundaries of their previous experience, not just in how they use their voices, but in developing their skills as singing actors through physical performance and vocal expression.
In most of our productions, our singers are accompanied by pianists in rehearsal and an orchestra for performances. These roles are also filled by young people, of similar age to the singers. In some productions, we use young conductors, generally university or college students, offering an outstanding opportunity for emerging young musicians to develop their experience.
For teenagers interested in theatre production, we offer a range of activities from the design and making of costumes, sets and props, to stage management and lighting. In most cases, the young production team run the performances independently.
Alongside our productions, we organise a variety of opera related activities including theatre visits and workshops with opera professionals. When attending opera performances in Cambridge and beyond, we always seek out the best possible concessionary prices for tickets.
